Coraline: Garden (VFX)

Sequence Supervisor / Senior Visual Effects Compositor:

I was really happy to get this sequence because it plays so nice – the birds are all time, and its just really pretty with the bleeding heart flowers and the frog in the pitcher plant. There was one shot in particular, right after Coraline comes through the gate, where the birds were shot too flat and Henry hated it. I was asked to experiment with various techniques to fake the volume of the birds. BVH dubbed me “Senior Bird Underglow Wrangler” when I finally came up with something which Henry found acceptable.

Working in VFX on an animated film is very rewarding because the usual compositing tasks are very animation intensive so I often animated many elements that are part of the post production process. This sequence was particularly complex and rewarding in this respect.
