Coraline: Driving (VFX)

Sequence Supervisor / Senior Visual Effects Compositor:

The driving sequence was pretty much standard compositing tasks with minimal stereo challenges. The exception was matching all the pieces on the Z-axis shot which was very tricky, the front of the car was shot separately so the animator could access the puppets and (of course) the 2 pieces didn’t match well enough to be acceptable. The 4 point match-move / corner-pin to get it solid was a big deal especially in 3D stereo. There was a scratch on the lens as well which is very bothersome in 3D since it has no Z-depth, and the spatial placement of the rain had to be just so.

The most rewarding part of this sequence was actually getting the standard spill etc. issues worked out for the screen replacements so that the results retained all the subtleties present in the original plates. I really like the fog on the windows, the mist and reflections which together make it look natural rather than an obvious composite.
