TCM: Edward Hopper

Director:

The challenge with this piece was to bring life and movement to the paintings of Edward Hopper in a subtle way without full animation which was deemed inappropriate and cost prohibitive. Tom McClure studied Hopper intensively and did most of the beautiful layout work.

I built many of the scenes in 3D to create animated shadow passes. Others were achieved with simple wipes between a before and after painting – done analog so there was no going back. The client had us working with a piece of music they didn’t have the rights to so when we finally found this out there was a mad scramble to find something we could license and then we proceeded to adjust the edit and pacing of some individual shots as well to match. For some reason I can’t remember, the final shot was scrapped and the client wanted us to copy a specific painting which much to all our dismay, turned the palette suddenly cool at the end… All in a days work.
