Grocery Works: So Fresh

Visual Effects Supervisor / Animator:

This project was incredibly complex, involving a ton of rotoscoping and rod removal, morphed inbetweens, paint restoration, and logo tracking for multiple versions. Everything was stop motion animated in the traditional manner. Some of the puppets were fabricated from latex while others were actual fruits and vegetables. The ‘real’ puppets were essential in some cases because building anything that looked good was prohibitive given our schedule and budget. They presented a new challenge – the hot lights of a normal stop motion set wilted things instantly so we had to use modified fluorescent fixtures and white balance accordingly – extra tricky since we were shooting on standard reversal neg (film). Additionally the real puppets could not be kept ‘on model’ regarding color / size / texture etc. and often inbetweens were not available at all. To solve this we had a lot of painstaking frame-by-frame color correction and morphed inbetweens essentially doing assistant animation and fabrication QC with a team of compositors. My job was to supervise the entire process from boards to delivery addressing all of these challenges as they came up.

What may seem a fairly simple stop-motion spot on the surface is actually an incredible accomplishment given that it looks simple despite all the above challenges. Lots of respect for my incredibly talented team of compositors who fussed over these tiny details for several weeks in order to achieve this result.
